SOME SPECIAL CHALLENGES
WE ENCOUNTERED

KEEP IN MIND
This was in 1985. There was no email, internet, ATMs, or cell phones available for use. No digital cameras. This was before the EURO currency. We transacted business in multiple currencies that fluctuated daily against the U.S. Dollar. Germany was still divided, the Cold War was still in progress. On June 14, TWA flight 847 was hijacked by terrorists after taking off from Athens Airport, which derailed our itinerary since President Reagan called to boycott Greek tourism. We cancelled the Greek portion of our trip and had to revise our itinerary. More details below.

FLIGHT DELAYED TO EUROPE
Our flight left several hours late from Chicago due to an issue with the plane. We changed planes in Rekjavik, Iceland and arrived in Luxembough roughly three hours late. Getting set up with the mini-bus rental took longer than anticipated. This affected our driving time for our first day.

CHANGED FIRST NIGHT CITY
Due to the late arrival of our flight, the driving time to Paris was unrealistic. Our hostel reservation would not be held beyond a certain time. Our Plan B was to change the first night in Reims, which was within reasonable driving range. We investigated three possible overnight choices for Reims. The first two locations were full but found a large room available at the third. It was at a nice family style hotel in the old part of town. We were excited.

LOSS OF PARIS HOSTEL
We lost our reservation by not arriving at the hostel the previous night. We drove there hoping for any accommodation. They were very sympathetic and helped find an available hostel for us. Sadly it was not a Paris hostel. In a suburban location, a very nice modern hostel provided a base for two nights. Travel to Paris involved using the RER system train which connected with the Paris Metro system. It added commuter time each day for our Paris sightseeing.

OVERNIGHT IN VAN
Our original itinerary included arriving June 11, Day 6, to overnight at a youth hostel in Brussels, Belgium. Our travel was in a Ford mini-bus we had rented upon arrival in Europe. We had traveled using the freeway system, which is fast and easy but lacking history. At St Malo we chose to travel the local roads along the coast enjoying the scenic beauty and small villages. It did increase our travel time but it was worth it. The day's highlight was visiting the gothic city island of Mont St Michel and spent much of the day there, enjoying a great meal plus much time exploring. Afterwards we stopped at a WWII Museum in Bayeaux, the first city to be liberated. We arrived in Rouen for a late dinner. Rouen's cathedral had just closed, we missed it. It was in the very late hours before we arrived in Brussels where we had a driving tour of the city and refueled. Driving straight to Amsterdam to turn in the rental vehicle, we saved money and had more time to tour the city. Thus we had overnighted in the van rather than Brussels.

STARTING EURAIL

TERRORIST INCIDENT IN GREECE
We were originally visiting Greece as a highlight part of the trip. TWA flight 847 was operated with a Boeing 727-200, registration N64339. The flight originated in Cairo on the morning of June 14 with an uneventful flight from Cairo to Athens. After Flight 847 departed Athens for Rome it was commandeered shortly after takeoff by two terrorists who had smuggled a pistol and two grenades through Athens airport security. With 139 passengers and 8 crew members onboard, after careful negotiations, the hostages were released unharmed on June 30. During that time President Reagan called upon Americans to boycott travel to Greece angered by lack of security at Athens airport. We became aware of the hijacking on June 21 through discussion with other American tourists. On June 22 we consulted with Canadian and American embassies in Rome. Based on advisory we received we cancelled our trip to Greece. That created an 8-day hole in our itinerary. We continued our itinerary as if just returning from Greece. We created an adjusted itinerary we could later add into the trip. Parents were thankful we didn't go to Greece with the terrorist situation ongoing. The 1986 film "The Delta Force" is based on the TWA 847 hijacking. We never expected anything like terrorism to affect our trip plans.

MILAN UNDER TERRORIST THREAT
There was a terrorist threat to locations in Milan while we were there. No major tourist attractions in the city were open due to the threats ignited by anger toward the European Council. The Schengen Agreement on June 14 for the elimination of border controls was signed by Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands in Schengen (Luxembourg). The European Council was held in Milan on June 28-29 1985, to vote on the White Paper for the establishment of a single market in the European Economic Community, which later came into force on January 1, 1986. This document is also known as Cockfield’s White Paper. It was a turning point for the European Economic Community. Terrorists were against these ideas. Our trip to Milan on June 23 came during threats to destroy major sites in the city of Milan preceding the European Council's meeting. Major tourist sites being temporarily closed was affected by these factors. We visited the Sforza Castle, whi9ch was surrounded by armed military. We were greeted with bomb sniffing dogs and metal detectors. Just a small portion of a museum was open housing furniture history. We didn't stay long. We saw no other major sites and left Milan very disappointed.

TRAIN CANCELLED ON TRIP TO NAPLES JUNE 26/27
Our intended train to Naples was cancelled. We waited for the 2nd train as did so many other people. The 2nd train was very overcrowded, so we got off. All but one of us got off. The person still on had an itinerary. We waited for the 3rd train which arrived about 2:00 a.m. The 3rd train was super crowded as well but we boarded anyway. Once in Naples, we change to a second train to Sorrento. We had to get to Sorrento asap to reconnect with our missing person. We mostly sat in the aisles until seats eventually opened up after train stops. Making our way to Naples in southern Italy became a very long and tiring overnight challenge. Changed trains to Sorrento. We reunited with him at the Youth Hostel in Sorrento later that morning. All was well.

CARS DISCONNECTED ON TRAIN
On the way to Venice we were sitting in two different passenger cars. As trains move they break up cars to different destinations. One car was heading to Venice, while the other car was disconnecting at 6:00 a.m. and heading south to Bologna. The Venice car was crowded while the Bologna car was nearly empty. That's why some were sitting in the Bologna car. Those sitting in the Bologna car, we'll call 2nd group, had to move before the disconnection at 6:00 a.m. We went to wake them at 6:05 a.m. and saw nothing but clear track where their car had once been. The 2nd group eventually awoke, departed the train in Bologna, and boarded a train north to Venice. The first group checked in at the Venice hotel, visited the bank, and waited for the 2nd group at the train station. Both groups, once reunited in Venice, celebrated by eating a meal at a fancy restaurant, one of the most expensive of the trip. That led to the next issue listed below.

ALLERGY IN VENICE
Cliff had no idea he was allergic to lobster. His body alerted him to that fact shortly after the reunion meal at a high class restaurant in Venice. He spent the remainder of the day at the hotel in a bathroom. It wasn't pleasant. The next day he was still in recovery mode as well as in "Zombie Mode" for one or two days in Vienna. The seafood lasagna ordered at the expensive Venice restaurant was obviously loaded with plenty of lobster. The lasagna tasted great but the health effect was ill advised.
